Anatoly Quill is a thoroughly unpleasant individual.
Actually, Anatoly Quill would like to be a thoroughly unpleasant individual.
Anatoly was brought up by two nice, polite parents in a semi. They did not keep him up at night with their screaming rows. They did not lock him in the cellar and feed him on beetles and worms. They decorated his room and threw him a lovely party every birthday, with a bouncy castle. The closest Anatoly Quill’s parents came to cruelty was to make him eat his sprouts.
Anatoly grew up into a thin, average-looking lad who everyone really liked, no matter how hard he tried to be mean, ruthless and twisted. He quit his nice office job and started work experience at an undertaker’s, dressing the corpses. He spent every night in the foulest, grimmest pubs, looking for unpleasant characters to learn from.
Then he met Scratch: the nastiest most unashamed ball of poison he’d ever seen. Anatoly knew he could never be as mean as him. But what he could do was tell Scratch’s story. So here it is.
